Dan Leibrandt sat me down for Local Marketing Secrets and actually let the conversation run. His write-up went live 27 October 2025. It never landed on this site.

His page: danleibrandt.com/local-marketing-secrets/dave-carroll.

I am not going to re-quote Dan’s episode as if I transcribed it here. Read him. The pieces I will own on my own domain:

  • The neighborhood math that became Dope — Data On Previous Engagement — started in a home-service truck, not a slide deck.
  • Growth feelings do not disappear when the revenue number gets bigger. I said that to Dan because it is still true.
  • Horse blinders. When we committed to Dope, we stopped chasing every partnership that looked shiny. That discipline is a bigger part of the Inc. 5000 run than any ad tactic.
  • The prison chapter is already on this site, on purpose, in Felon to Founder and Dope Conversations episode 3. It is my story. It is not the hero of the homepage.

If you came from Dan’s show and you want the product, go to dopemarketing.com. If you want the rest of the conversations I have already recorded, start at Watch & listen.

What I put on YouTube after this blog froze https://thedavidcarroll.com/dope-channel-catchup-2026/ Wed, 02 Sep 2026 17:50:08 +0000 https://thedavidcarroll.com/dope-channel-catchup-2026/

This site’s last blog post is dated 13 April 2026. Our YouTube channel did not stop. This page is the library card for the uploads that never became articles.

That 6 March 2026 video — Grow Your Business with DOPE Marketing — is the long-form walkthrough I want a stranger to see first. Everything after it on the channel is shorter: print quality, thank-you boxes, yard signs, DOPE 3.0 targeting. Useful. Not a replacement for the conversation.

What shipped on YouTube and not here

  • 6 Mar 2026 — Grow Your Business with DOPE Marketing (x1CHWYkE6N0)
  • 14 Sep 2025 — Neighborhood reactivation (fbszwmKldxc) — now its own article
  • Summer 2025 shorts — cookie boxes, handouts, postcards, Starway Roofing, DOPE 3.0, yard signs, GPS-for-marketing. Those stay on @DopeMarketing. I am not going to turn every 20-second promo into a blog post.

What this site already had

Dope Conversations 1–25, the Jack Wendt office tour, HighLevel + direct mail, Untrapped, Roofing Insights, Housecall Pro, Restoration Domination. The library is large. The homepage did not point at it, the blog cards had no pictures, and the “Podcast” page told you to go look at the blog. That is the opposite of a personal brand. The watch hub is now /podcast/.

If you only click one new thing besides the video above, make it three years on the Inc. 5000. Independent numbers, not a press release.

Neighborhood reactivation: more jobs on streets you already won https://thedavidcarroll.com/neighborhood-reactivation-dope-marketing/ Wed, 02 Sep 2026 17:50:05 +0000 https://thedavidcarroll.com/neighborhood-reactivation-dope-marketing/

The best next job is usually on the same street as the last one. That is not a slogan. It is why I built Dope.

We published that video on 14 September 2025: Neighborhood reactivation — get more jobs in the right neighborhoods. It never got its own page on this site. The blog froze in April 2026 while the channel kept teaching. This page is the catch-up.

What “reactivation” means in home services

You already won a street. The truck was there. The neighbors watched. Then you left, and digital ads tried to find those same people by bidding against every other contractor in the metro. Neighborhood reactivation is the opposite move: go back to the streets where you have proof, and mail the houses that already saw the work.

That is Data On Previous Engagement. Not a cold list from a zip code. The people next to a finished roof, a washed driveway, a new HVAC install.

How we actually send it

Draw the neighborhood. Filter the homes. Trigger the postcard, the handwritten note, or the leave-behind from the CRM event — not from a once-a-year mail house minimum. No minimum order is the product promise because a contractor does not live in 5,000-piece batches. They live in this week’s jobs.

If you want the HighLevel version of the same idea — CRM events that send the mail — that conversation is already on this site. If you want Inc.’s independent numbers for the company that came out of this math, I wrote three years on the Inc. 5000.

The video is short on purpose. Watch it, then go look at your last 20 jobs on a map. The cluster is the campaign.

Three years on the Inc. 5000 https://thedavidcarroll.com/inc-5000-three-years-dope-marketing/ Wed, 02 Sep 2026 17:49:35 +0000 https://thedavidcarroll.com/inc-5000-three-years-dope-marketing/

Three years in a row on the Inc. 5000. I am proud of the ranking, and I am more proud of what it actually measures: we kept growing fast enough, as a real Minnesota company, to stay on a list that drops people the year they slow down.

Inc.’s own profile for Dope Marketing (inc.com/profile/dope) is the source of record for the numbers I will put on this site:

  • 2024 — #475 (and #38 in the U.S. for Marketing/Advertising the year we first landed)
  • 2025 — #670
  • 2026 — #864
  • 401% three-year growth
  • Location: Eagan, Minnesota. Leadership: David Carroll

A rank that moves from 475 to 864 is not a demotion in the way people read it on Twitter. The Inc. 5000 is a growth list. The companies around you get bigger too. Staying on it three years is the point. Falling off would be the story.

What the ranking is not

It is not a valuation. It is not a headcount brag. It is not a founding-year argument. Inc. lists us as founded in 2019. Other public pages say 2018 or 2017, depending on whether you count the first Minnesota experiments, the LLC paperwork, or the year the product looked like Dope. I am not going to fight Inc. on my own homepage. The work started in Minnesota, in home services, when I figured out that the houses next to a finished job were the easiest next customers.

DOPE still means Data On Previous Engagement. That is the neighborhood math: mail the people who already have a reason to trust the truck in their street.

Why this belongs on thedavidcarroll.com

The company site, dopemarketing.com, is where contractors buy mail. This domain is the entity home — who I am, the conversations I have already recorded, and the proof a stranger (or Google) can check. The Inc. profile names me as leadership. Wikidata already has a Person item for me at Q138027410, and Google already has a Knowledge Graph id. The missing piece was this site still talking like it was 2025.

If you want the product walkthrough, the video at the top is me on our channel. If you want the shop floor, Jack Wendt walked it with me: the office tour. If you want the neighborhood version of the same idea, that is neighborhood reactivation.

I am a husband, a dad of five, and I still run. The list is a receipt. The work is the mail.

What Is Dope Marketing? Everything You Need to Know https://thedavidcarroll.com/what-is-dope-marketing-everything-you-need-to-know/ Tue, 07 Apr 2026 08:46:14 +0000 https://thedavidcarroll.com/what-is-dope-marketing-everything-you-need-to-know/ Dope Marketing is a direct mail marketing automation platform built specifically for home service businesses. Founded by David Carroll, the company has grown into the leading solution for contractors who want to leverage the power of physical mail without the complexity of traditional direct mail campaigns.

The Problem Dope Marketing Solves

Before Dope Marketing, running a direct mail campaign required coordinating with print shops, purchasing mailing lists, managing logistics, and tracking results manually. For busy contractors—plumbers, HVAC technicians, roofers, electricians, and landscapers—this was too complex and time-consuming. Most simply gave up on direct mail, missing out on one of the highest-ROI marketing channels available.

How It Works

Dope Marketing automates the entire direct mail process. Users choose from professionally designed templates optimized for home services, select their target audience using demographic and geographic data, and set up automated campaigns that run on their schedule. The platform handles printing, addressing, and mailing—all from a simple dashboard.

Key Features

The platform includes automated new mover campaigns that reach homeowners within days of moving in, neighborhood targeting based on property data, CRM integrations with popular home service software, and detailed analytics that track response rates and ROI. These features make it possible for even solo operators to run sophisticated direct mail campaigns.

The Vision

David Carroll’s vision for Dope Marketing extends beyond just sending mail. The platform is evolving into a complete offline marketing automation system, helping home service companies build lasting relationships with their communities through physical touchpoints. In a world of digital fatigue, the mailbox remains a powerful channel for building trust and driving business.

ROI of Direct Mail vs Digital Advertising for Contractors https://thedavidcarroll.com/roi-of-direct-mail-vs-digital-advertising-for-contractors/ Tue, 07 Apr 2026 08:46:12 +0000 https://thedavidcarroll.com/roi-of-direct-mail-vs-digital-advertising-for-contractors/ Contractors face a constant challenge: where to invest marketing dollars for the best return. Digital advertising—Google Ads, Facebook, and social media—gets most of the attention, but direct mail consistently delivers competitive or superior ROI for home service businesses. David Carroll, founder of Dope Marketing, has the data to prove it.

The Real Cost Comparison

Google Ads for home service keywords have become increasingly expensive. Cost-per-click for terms like “plumber near me” or “HVAC repair” can range from $15-$75 depending on the market. With conversion rates of 5-10%, you’re paying $150-$1,500 per lead before any job is booked.

Direct mail, by contrast, costs $0.50-$1.50 per piece delivered. With response rates of 2-5% and higher intent from recipients, the cost per qualified lead often comes in lower than digital channels—especially in competitive markets where ad costs have skyrocketed.

The Multi-Touch Advantage

One area where direct mail excels is multi-touch marketing. A homeowner who receives a well-designed postcard, then sees a retargeting ad online, then receives a follow-up mailer, is far more likely to convert than someone who only encounters your brand through a single channel. This is exactly the strategy that Dope Marketing enables—automated direct mail that integrates with your digital marketing stack.

Measuring What Matters

The key to comparing ROI across channels is tracking. Use unique phone numbers, landing pages, or offer codes for each marketing channel. This gives you accurate data on cost per lead and cost per acquisition. Many contractors are surprised to find that their direct mail campaigns outperform digital ads once proper tracking is in place.

The best marketing strategy isn’t direct mail OR digital—it’s both working together. Learn more about building an integrated marketing strategy at thedavidcarroll.com.

Podcast Appearances: David Carroll on Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Growth https://thedavidcarroll.com/podcast-appearances-david-carroll-on-marketing-entrepreneurship-and-growth/ Tue, 07 Apr 2026 08:46:09 +0000 https://thedavidcarroll.com/podcast-appearances-david-carroll-on-marketing-entrepreneurship-and-growth/ David Carroll has been a frequent guest on podcasts across the marketing, entrepreneurship, and home service industries. These conversations cover everything from building Dope Marketing to strategies for scaling contractor businesses. Below is a roundup of key themes and insights from David’s podcast appearances.

On Building Dope Marketing

Across multiple podcast interviews, David has shared the origin story of Dope Marketing—how he identified the gap in direct mail automation for home service companies and built a platform to fill it. The recurring theme is identifying a specific pain point in a specific industry and building a focused solution rather than trying to serve everyone.

On Mentorship and Learning

David frequently credits his relationship with Dennis Yu and the BlitzMetrics team as transformative in his entrepreneurial journey. The key takeaway: find mentors who have built what you want to build, study their systems, and adapt them to your industry. Don’t try to reinvent everything from scratch.

On Marketing Strategy

A consistent message across David’s podcast appearances is the importance of multi-channel marketing. No single channel—whether it’s direct mail, social media, SEO, or paid advertising—should carry the entire burden of customer acquisition. The most resilient businesses diversify their lead sources and build systems that work together.

On Scaling and Team Building

As Dope Marketing has grown, David has shared lessons about building teams, creating processes, and maintaining culture during rapid growth. The advice is practical: document everything, hire for culture fit, and invest in training before you think you need to.

The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Building a Personal Brand in Home Services https://thedavidcarroll.com/the-entrepreneurs-guide-to-building-a-personal-brand-in-home-services/ Tue, 07 Apr 2026 08:46:07 +0000 https://thedavidcarroll.com/the-entrepreneurs-guide-to-building-a-personal-brand-in-home-services/ In the home service industry, your personal brand is your competitive advantage. Homeowners choose contractors they trust, and trust starts with visibility and authority. David Carroll built his personal brand alongside Dope Marketing, and the two have become inseparable—each amplifying the other.

Why Personal Branding Matters for Contractors

When a homeowner searches for a plumber, HVAC technician, or roofer, they’re looking for someone they can trust in their home. A strong personal brand—built through content, community involvement, and consistent messaging—creates that trust before the first phone call. The contractors who invest in personal branding command higher prices, attract better employees, and build more resilient businesses.

The BlitzMetrics Framework

Working with BlitzMetrics and Dennis Yu, David Carroll learned the power of systematic personal branding. The framework is straightforward: create authentic content showing your expertise, distribute it across the platforms where your customers spend time, and amplify the best-performing pieces with small paid budgets.

For home service entrepreneurs, this means documenting your work, sharing customer success stories, and teaching what you know. A roofer who regularly posts educational content about roof maintenance builds more trust than one who only posts promotional offers.

From Content to Customers

The connection between personal branding and revenue is direct. When David Carroll speaks at industry events, appears on podcasts, or publishes articles about marketing strategy, it drives awareness for Dope Marketing. The same principle applies at every level—a local contractor who’s known as the expert in their community will always win more business than an anonymous competitor.

Start building your personal brand today. Share your story, teach your expertise, and show up consistently. The compound effect of personal branding is one of the most powerful growth engines available to home service entrepreneurs.
